DaisyDisk : disk visualization tool for mac

DaisyDisk

What is disk visualization tool? It’s a software that let you easily and graphically see what is in your disk. I’ve used Disk Inventory X on mac for long time. It’s free and helpful when I want to see what hog my harddisk space. By the way, I’m switching to DaisyDisk ($20), another disk visualization tool for mac in the market.

Though both Disk Inventory X and DaisyDisk are the same kind of app, the experience is different. Disk Inventory X visualizes your disk as a big rectangular block with a lot of small blocks inside. The folder structure of the disk can be explore in the same way as List in Finder. The size of each type of files is also showed on the right panel which can be hidden. This is not bad, it works very well for me. But, after I’ve tried DaisyDisk yesterday, it showed me another level of experience.

Disk Inventory X

DaisyDisk visualizes disk in circular graphic with folder list on the right side. The graphic changes dynamically to visualize the folder you access. When you roll your mouse over each small section in circular graphic, the detail of that section will show up on the sidebar. I think all the smooth transition and animation are the advantage of Core-Animation in OSX 10.5 which is the minimum requirement of DaisyDisk.

Disk Inventory X works well for me, and DaisyDisk is worth $20. You can choose the solution that suit you. But, for me, now I’m using DaisyDisk for FREE! MacHeist‘s latest mission is now on and only one day left! What I did is just put to correct coordinates, then I got a license number for DaisyDisk.

If you like it, go and get it.

Thank MacHeist and DaisyDisk

Korg R3 Editor software screenshots

Korg R3 : Editor Software

I’m now considering to buy new synth which is just a compact synth but with full-sized key. There’re 2 candidates; Korg R3 and Roland SH-201. I can easily find information of SH-201 on Roland’s website. But for R3, I think Korg’s website is not good at usability. Since R3 doesn’t have many knobs to edit its sound, so the software editor is needed. I need to see how R3 software looks like but I can’t see any screenshots in Korg website, even googling around.

What I did is download the software from Korg.com and installed into my mac. This is the only way for me to see it. So I took screenshots and post them here. Hope this would be useful for those who want to see Korg R3 editor software which can’t find on Korg.com.

Pro Tools 8 LE : Screenshot1

I’m able to upgrade from Pro Tools LE 7.4.2 to 8.0 with no cost because I bought MBox 2 Mini after October 3rd, 2008. I rarely use Pro Tools so far but I plan to use it more on my mac to get started on sound design. So I decide to download Pro Tools 8.0 LE from Digidesign yesterday. It’s 4.2GB, such a big installation file. Firstly I don’t want to download it because it’s too big and takes time to download, but I’m too lazy to go out and ask for installation DVD from my friend. I download it eventually. Digidesign surprised me with the downloading speed. My internet connection isn’t that good for internation link but I could finished downloading this 4.2GB within 6 hours. I thinks it’s because of Digidesign has local server in Thailand, nice!

Together with Pro Tools 8 LE, I download cs3 update for the latest bug fixed. Both of these files were installed into my Macbook Pro a moment ago. Installation process was smooth. Once I started Pro Tools, it asked for authorization code which Digidesign sent me via email after online activation. I put the code, then experience the new GUI of arrange view.

Back to the day I firstly touch Pro Tools, it was version 5.5 on OS9. By the time I began to familiar with it, Pro Tools 6 on OSX was released. I still remember how I feel when I see the GUI of PT6 compare with PT5. This feeling came back to me again when I see the new GUI of PT8 against PT7.

I’m yet to try anything on PT but try to do soon. Many new plugins included in PT8 attract me to try them as well.

Propellerhead Record Open Beta

Record Open Beta

Prepellerhead has just announced a moment ago on Twitter that beta version of Record is now open for everyone. I’ve been invited by @theaudiogeek last week to be a beta tester of Propellerhead Record (thanks Jon). But now if anyone want to try Record, you don’t need an invitation.

Record Open Beta lets you download the RC4 version of Record and fully use it without limitations until the official release on Sep 9, 2009. The software itself is really nice and I love it. Please note that if you’ve Reason installed on your machine, you can use Reason’s modules inside Record. If not and you want to experience Record teamed up with Reason, you can download the demo of Reason and use it together. But, Record have to be in demo mode to work with Reason’s demo.

The latest part of Record Micro Tutorial is about setting up Record Open Beta. It shows what to do when you open Record for the first time.

As a Reason user, I’d like to recommend all Reason users to try Record, even you don’t want to record anything. The way Record handles instrements and effects helps you organize your messy Reason racks. Record racks and the gorgeous mixer benefit Reason users in many ways. Try it and you’ll love it.

Waves CLA Classic Compressors

July 17, 2009 Leave a comment

I can’t remember how many times the LA-2A, LA-3A and 1176 classic compressors were modeled as software plugin. It seems like if any developers want to create a compressor plugin with vintage-look GUI, it must be one of these three models.

By the way, I’m yet to experience the real things as hardware, even their famous software version created by Universal Audio. Waves has just released these classic compressors as software plugins again, called Waves CLA Classic Compressors. CLA stands for Chris Lord-Alge, the sound engineer who teamed up with Waves to create this plugin. There’re 4 compressors in this bundle. CLA-2A, CLA-3A and 2 version of CLA-76, Bluey and Blacky.

It’s no-brainer to guess which compressors these plugins are modeled after. The GUI of CLA was nice and classic as its name. It costs $800 for native version, pretty expensive as always. Looking forward to try it shortly.
