Mackie Onyx-i Series : FireWire Recording Mixers

Mackie Onyx-i Series : FireWire Recording Mixers

As promised, Mackie officially announced the new line of mixer on 09/09/09. They are ONYXi series, the analog mixer with built-in firewire audio interface which support upto 24bit/96kHz. By the way, that was not what the world was waiting to here from Mackie. The point is “what about Pro Tools compatibility”. Mackie clearly stated about this in their website.

Onyx-i FireWire mixers can be used with all major DAWs, and is qualified by Mackie for use with Pro Tools® M-Powered 8*, offering those users a host of new hardware options.

I know that Pro Tools M-Powered 8 compatibility might not be that interesting since you have to buy the software separately, unlike the Pro Tools LE which is bundled with every Digidesign interface. But Mackie revealed the option, this is a beginning of hardware alternative for Pro Tools.

Anyway, according to what is written on Mackie website, we’ve to keep on waiting for a few more week to see the driver and full detail of how to use Mackie ONYXi with Pro Tools M-Powered 8.

Onyx-i Series Mixers are qualified by Mackie for use with Pro Tools® M-Powered 8. Mackie will release a driver (via together with full details of how to use the Onyx-i Series with Pro Tools® M-Powered 8 in the coming weeks.

more detail :

PS. seem like the word qualified by Mackie will be the crucial key for any legal issue coming afterward. There is no response from Avid/Digidesign so far about this announcement. Stay tuned 🙂

Avid has decided not to exhibit at AES 2009

I got this link from @theaudiogeek on Twitter. It’s the official announcement from Avid that they will not exhibit at AES 2009. Avid explains they aren’t about to depart permanently from AES nor other trade shows. They decide not to exhibit only AES 2009.

Though Avid booth won’t show up in AES 2009, they will host meetings at a nearby hotel. What’s the point? If Avid want to host meetings or seminars, they can do it anytime and anywhere. In my opinion, Avid still want to benefit from AES show and also want to wait and see how AES will be effected from economic downturn, trade show attendance decline and the rise of web-event at the same time.

After AES 2009 in October. The next trade shows are Winter NAMM on January 2009 and MusikMesse on April. By that time, we should see how the trade show will be for the next few years.

Just my 2 cents.

Mackie Onyx 820i

Mackie Onyx 820i

On Aug 8, 2008 (08/08/08), there was such a great opening ceremony of Olympic games in Beijing, China. What about 09/09/09, what is happening? A few months ago Propellerhead announced Record and promised that Record will be available on 09/09/09. Today I’ve just read the news mention another “big thing” will happen on 09/09/09. It’s from Mackie. and Mixblog from Mix magazine mention Mackie Onyx 820i, the analog mixer with Firewire interface option. What make this mixer stand out is it’s compatible with Pro Tools M-Powered! Not much details about this so far. But, if this is real, it must be the next big thing to talk about for DAW market. Besides Digidesign’s hardware, there’s only M-Audio products which are compatible with Pro Tools, and it must be Pro Tools M-Powered. The news mentions that Onyx 820i comes with Mackie Universal Driver version 1, which make it able to use with Pro Tools M-Powered.

09/09/09 will be the day Mackie officially announce the new Onyx 820i and I expect to see more info about its compatibility with Pro Tools M-Powered. Maybe this will be the first step of Digidesign to “open” Pro Tools to use with other audio interfaces. Stay tuned.

Pro Tools 8 LE : Screenshot1

I’m able to upgrade from Pro Tools LE 7.4.2 to 8.0 with no cost because I bought MBox 2 Mini after October 3rd, 2008. I rarely use Pro Tools so far but I plan to use it more on my mac to get started on sound design. So I decide to download Pro Tools 8.0 LE from Digidesign yesterday. It’s 4.2GB, such a big installation file. Firstly I don’t want to download it because it’s too big and takes time to download, but I’m too lazy to go out and ask for installation DVD from my friend. I download it eventually. Digidesign surprised me with the downloading speed. My internet connection isn’t that good for internation link but I could finished downloading this 4.2GB within 6 hours. I thinks it’s because of Digidesign has local server in Thailand, nice!

Together with Pro Tools 8 LE, I download cs3 update for the latest bug fixed. Both of these files were installed into my Macbook Pro a moment ago. Installation process was smooth. Once I started Pro Tools, it asked for authorization code which Digidesign sent me via email after online activation. I put the code, then experience the new GUI of arrange view.

Back to the day I firstly touch Pro Tools, it was version 5.5 on OS9. By the time I began to familiar with it, Pro Tools 6 on OSX was released. I still remember how I feel when I see the GUI of PT6 compare with PT5. This feeling came back to me again when I see the new GUI of PT8 against PT7.

I’m yet to try anything on PT but try to do soon. Many new plugins included in PT8 attract me to try them as well.

Pro Tools get started

Pro Tools Method One DVD

I got Digidesign MBox 2 mini more than 6 months ago. I bought it because I want to learn how to use Protools but I rarely use it so far. I’ve just made up my mind a few days ago that I should get started with Pro Tools. At least, I should make it worth spending money on this MBox.

MBox 2 Mini comes with Method One DVD. I think it is attached with every Digidesign audio interface. I spent 2 hours today watching this DVD. As always, I felt sleepy while watching this kind of tutorial DVD. But I watched it all the way through anyway.

It’s very good resource to get started; easy to understand and informative. Many shortcuts and tips were mentioned in the DVD. I can’t remember them all but it let me know what I can do with Pro Tools. Spending 2 hours was worthwhile but I still need myriad of hours to practice to be able to use it effectively & efficiently.

I strongly recommend this DVD for those who want to get started on Pro Tools.
