Waves Post Production

November 13, 2009 5 comments

Waves has been a big-name for audio processing plugin for years. Their plugins are widely used in music production, and also in audio post-production. Waves has just released 2 new plugins designed for post production in the new series, Waves Post Production. Let’s have a look at these two plugins.

Waves Noise Suppressor and LoAir are interesting for Sound Design. Here’s what Waves said about their 2 new post-production weapons.

WNS Waves Noise Suppressor is a real-time multiband processor for fast and effective broadband noise suppression on dialog tracks.

For years, sound design and post production professionals have been waiting for a subharmonic synthesizer plug-in that delivers the earthshaking sound of hardware. The wait is over. [LoAir]

This is clear for what they can do. What WNS interests me the word “Real-Time”. Normally, noise reduction plugin needs high degree of calculation which comes latency. Waves said WNS use low CPU and zero latency. It must be a very useful plugin when working with on-location dialog.

Waves LoAir

For LoAir, as Waves said, we’ve been looked for a subharmonic synthesizer for long time. Low-end rumble is always needed in sound design. Personally, I really like the copy writing for LoAir, Get Ready to Rumble. Wil Waves release Michael Buffer Collections soon?

Free VST from Bootsy to join KVR DC'09

November 2, 2009 1 comment

Variety of Sound (aka Bootsy) is one of the best VST-effect developers, and all of their plugins are FREE. Moreover, I think Bootsy plugins have very attractive GUI, the very important thing I concern when choosing plugins 🙂

Variety of Sound has just released the new free dynamic plugin as VST for Windows, FerricTDS – Tape Dynamics Simulator. Simply put, it simulates dynamic response and saturation of tape recorder. But this is not a normal release, Bootsy releases FerricTDS as a candidate of KVR Developer Challenge ’09. If you like it, vote for it!

The GUI of FerricTDS is eye-catching as Bootsy plugins always do. love it.

is The Eddie Kramer Collection by Waves worth $800?

Waves Signature Series : The Eddie Kramer Collection

Waves Signature Series : The Eddie Kramer Collection

Waves has just released the new plugins in Signature Series, The Eddie Kramer Collection. There are 5 application-specific plugins in this collection. The sound (and the name) of Eddie Kramer is the main focus of this bundle. I’ve no idea how many people will spend $800 to make their recording to sound like Eddie Kramer’s.

For me, each plugin in Waves The Eddie Kramer Collection is a channel strip with effects which there are only some main parameters available to tweak. And the other parameters for fine-tuning were set by Eddie Kramer to replicate his sound. Of course, I can’t afford $800 plugin right now. But if I could, I wouldn’t buy it anyway. I think it’s too specific and overpriced. There are ways to make $800 worthwhile. Learning to replicate Eddie Kramer’s sound by ordinary plugin should be more useful in the long run.

New UAD plugins : Fatso and EMT250

I’m always excited everytime Universal Audio (UA) releases new UAD plugin. I love to watch video demo from UA. Today UA releases version 5.4 software update for UAD platform together with 3 new plugins; Fatso, EMT250 and Neve 31102EQ. Video of the 31102 is not available yet, but the others are here.

I feel like watching an engineering documentary. It’s mostly about science, electronic and engineering. Furthermore, the quality of audio in every UA video is very good. Of course, they’re audio specialists. I’ve never tried UAD plugin but I’ve read a lot from magazines and websites about their stellar audio quality.

If I could have my own workstation for sound design in the future, UAD-powered DSP must be one of my important tools.

I’ve just read the review of Studio Devil’s Virtual Bass Amp in AudioGeekZine.com by @theaudiogeek. The result is stellar and make me interested in Studio Devil product. This developer make virtual amp plugin for both guitar and bass. I had a look at facebook of Studio Devil and found this picture posted in late June. At first I thought it must be the next version of Virture Guitar Amp, and Yes it is! It’s called Amp Modeler Pro, which is now in beta test.

Waves CLA Classic Compressors

July 17, 2009 Leave a comment

I can’t remember how many times the LA-2A, LA-3A and 1176 classic compressors were modeled as software plugin. It seems like if any developers want to create a compressor plugin with vintage-look GUI, it must be one of these three models.

By the way, I’m yet to experience the real things as hardware, even their famous software version created by Universal Audio. Waves has just released these classic compressors as software plugins again, called Waves CLA Classic Compressors. CLA stands for Chris Lord-Alge, the sound engineer who teamed up with Waves to create this plugin. There’re 4 compressors in this bundle. CLA-2A, CLA-3A and 2 version of CLA-76, Bluey and Blacky.

It’s no-brainer to guess which compressors these plugins are modeled after. The GUI of CLA was nice and classic as its name. It costs $800 for native version, pretty expensive as always. Looking forward to try it shortly.
