Mackie Onyx-i Series : FireWire Recording Mixers

Mackie Onyx-i Series : FireWire Recording Mixers

As promised, Mackie officially announced the new line of mixer on 09/09/09. They are ONYXi series, the analog mixer with built-in firewire audio interface which support upto 24bit/96kHz. By the way, that was not what the world was waiting to here from Mackie. The point is “what about Pro Tools compatibility”. Mackie clearly stated about this in their website.

Onyx-i FireWire mixers can be used with all major DAWs, and is qualified by Mackie for use with Pro Tools® M-Powered 8*, offering those users a host of new hardware options.

I know that Pro Tools M-Powered 8 compatibility might not be that interesting since you have to buy the software separately, unlike the Pro Tools LE which is bundled with every Digidesign interface. But Mackie revealed the option, this is a beginning of hardware alternative for Pro Tools.

Anyway, according to what is written on Mackie website, we’ve to keep on waiting for a few more week to see the driver and full detail of how to use Mackie ONYXi with Pro Tools M-Powered 8.

Onyx-i Series Mixers are qualified by Mackie for use with Pro Tools® M-Powered 8. Mackie will release a driver (via www.mackie.com) together with full details of how to use the Onyx-i Series with Pro Tools® M-Powered 8 in the coming weeks.

more detail :

PS. seem like the word qualified by Mackie will be the crucial key for any legal issue coming afterward. There is no response from Avid/Digidesign so far about this announcement. Stay tuned 🙂

Working with Video in Pro Tools

Working with Video in Pro Tools

I found these articles while googling to find out which video format I should use with Pro Tools. “Working with Video in Pro Tools” is article in Sound on Sound magazine, comprised of 3 parts published in Jan-Feb-Mar 2006 issued.

The first part in Jan 2006 is about video format to use with Pro Tools and how to playback video file in Pro Tools session, together with briefly explanation about OMF. OMF was explained for more detail in the second part of these article in Feb 2006. To import OMF into Pro Tools was explained in this part as well. The last part in March 2006 talked about how to organize audio files in Pro Tools session after OMF importing. Some audio post-production basics were also explained, such as sound effect syncing, M&E tracks and Foley.

Mackie Onyx 820i

Mackie Onyx 820i

On Aug 8, 2008 (08/08/08), there was such a great opening ceremony of Olympic games in Beijing, China. What about 09/09/09, what is happening? A few months ago Propellerhead announced Record and promised that Record will be available on 09/09/09. Today I’ve just read the news mention another “big thing” will happen on 09/09/09. It’s from Mackie.

Sonicstate.com and Mixblog from Mix magazine mention Mackie Onyx 820i, the analog mixer with Firewire interface option. What make this mixer stand out is it’s compatible with Pro Tools M-Powered! Not much details about this so far. But, if this is real, it must be the next big thing to talk about for DAW market. Besides Digidesign’s hardware, there’s only M-Audio products which are compatible with Pro Tools, and it must be Pro Tools M-Powered. The news mentions that Onyx 820i comes with Mackie Universal Driver version 1, which make it able to use with Pro Tools M-Powered.

09/09/09 will be the day Mackie officially announce the new Onyx 820i and I expect to see more info about its compatibility with Pro Tools M-Powered. Maybe this will be the first step of Digidesign to “open” Pro Tools to use with other audio interfaces. Stay tuned.
