Record iHear band at Wawee coffeeshop

Last Sunday (Oct 25, 2009) I went to Wawee coffeeshop, not for coffee, but for the good music. iHear is the host band every Sunday. What make last Sunday special is there were video and audio recording. Video was shot by @Hongsyok (ChangKhui.com) with his handycam, simple and suitable with small space of Wawee. But, audio recording was not that simple. Since all the musicians (led by @iPattt) wanted no compromise, all portable recording gears we could find were brought into that small room.

It was raining. The band moved from outside to upstairs of the coffeeshop. @iChattt brought a powerful portable recording system, comprise of the 15″ unibody MacbookPro (with plenty of harddisk space) and Presonus Firepod. The Firepod can record 8 mic-in simultaneously, and we used them all.

The main sound reinforcement system is the one and only Bose L1. 4 inputs were fed into this monster; 2 microphones (vocal , brass section) , mono line out from Roland RD-700SX digital piano and the last input was guitar. Now let’s say about inputs those were fed into Firepod.

  • Guitar : direct from @feelinglomo’s Fender strat into Firepod, then send it out from Firepod to Bose L1 for FOH.
  • Mic 1 : the lead vocal mic was sent through Bose L1 into Firepod.
  • Mic 2 : this mic was sent through the L1 as well. Both mic inputs on L1 can send the through-signal, it’s very useful for recording.
  • Keyboard L/R : The advantage of Roland RD-700 series is they have another pair of balanced XLR separated from the main 1/4″ outputs. It’s handy to connect 1/4″ mono out to Bose L1 for FOH and connect XLR pair into 2 separated channels on Firepod.
  • Kick : Thank Tula for his Shure Beta 91 (and tons of XLR cable / you saved our lifes), the PZM mic which was suitable for the kick drum
  • Overhead L/R : Thank Joelle (www.proplugin.com) for the match-pair condenser mics from sE Electronics. sorry I don’t know what model they are. I tried to follow @Kijjaz‘s suggestion via twitter by placing two overhead mics with the same distant from snare to prevent the phase cancellation. But, due to the size of room and the situation, I can’t keep the distant right. Hope the phase problem would be fixed in the mix.

Drum and guitar were in the separated room, so monitoring is needed. A small monitor speaker was placed in front of the kick drum, that’s not a good place but we needed to leave some space in that room because people walked from time to time. Another bus was created in Logic to send 2 mics, keyboard and guitar to monitor.

While the show was running through, what I had to do is keep the level right, not peak and not too low. There was no hardware compressor before Firepod, so I kept my eyes on the meter, my ears with headphones and my hands on input gain. It was not that difficult. Only 2 microphones that I should concentrate. The lead vocal mic was used by many singers with different skill of mic using. Another mic was used for various functions; backing vocal, brass section, flute-sax-trumpet-kazoo solo and trumpet scratch. Once level changed, input gain needed to be changed together.

Though out the recording, Macbook Pro and Logic didn’t show me the power, but they showed me the rock-solid stability to run without a glitch for almost 3 hours. Impressed!

You don’t need to understand all technical things I’ve written above, just enjoy the music by iHear band without interruption by sound quality, that’s what I’d appreciate.
